The Benefits of Happiness in the Workplace

More and more, companies have been more focused on the things that will make and keep their employees happy.  Why? Studies have shown that it is beneficial in a few different ways.  One study showed that happy employees are up to 20% more productive than their unhappy peers.  If they are happy sales people their sales increase by 37%.  This is great news for the organizations, stock prices for Fortune 100 Best companies to Work for saw and increase of 14% where other companies reported a 6% increase.  So, it is safe to say that happiness is linked to productivity.

Being happy in the workplace can be described as “…wanting to feel like who you are matters (you want people to know your name), that what you do has an impact (that you’re engaged in relevant work) and you’re making progress (that your work is having an impact and leading you and your organization forward).”

Another key element to keeping employees happy is to keep them engaged, they need to continue to grow to stay productive.

But how can you keep your employees happy? Here are a few ways that you can help your team.

  1. Engage with happy people.  Some people are happier than others, find the people who are happy their happiness can rub off.
  2. Foster Meaningful relationships.  According to Harvard Business Review, “close work friendships boost employee satisfaction by 50%.” Moreover, “people with a best friend at work are seven times more likely to engage fully in their work.
  3. Build teams that foster friendships and use your current team members to tap new talent. If a member of your team has a strong working relationship with a former colleague and friend, don’t hesitate to bring that individual on board. Good people surround themselves with good people.

Be responsible for your happiness.

Happiness can be affected by many different things, its in our DNA, and in our like circumstances and individual experiences, but we do still have some control. Some employers may offer perks to try to foster happiness within their team, for example investing in wellness programs.
