New STEM Index measures Key Indicators
While the STEM index does show a slight uptick in the number of students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the indicator has remained largely flat for the last decade. The percentage of degrees in STEM fields compared to others is essentially the same it was in 2000.
With the number of both current and future jobs requiring employees talented in the STEM disciplines on the rise, the gap between supply and demand continues to grow. Despite an increase of 30 percent in STEM employment from 2000 to 2013, a decrease in interest in STEM by high school students, combined with the lack of minorities and women entering the field, has led to this talent gap.
Things need to improve at the Educational Level
Once again, the nation’s educational system needs to step up to turn around the general lack of interest in STEM among students. U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan feels the issue is one of national security. “In a knowledge-based, global economy, where education is more important than ever before, both to individual success and collective prosperity, our students are basically losing ground,” said Duncan.
